1) Struggle for peace: popular movements against military bases in East Asia
In East Asia, people are threatened by the existence of military bases and military exercises in their living environment. Is it a state of security that people are in danger of accident and crime caused by the troops that should secure the nation? In order to answer this question, we hold this workshop. With inviting some local activists from Korea, Okinawa and mainland Japan, we will have active discussion with participants for the hopeful future without any wars.

(2) East Asian Experiences for Tackling with the Urban Poor and Homeless
This on-site workshop is held in Airin district, popularly known as Kamagasaki, in Osaka , where largest number of casual day-labourers and rough sleepers in Japan concentrate. In the current economic depression, rapid increase of rough sleepers urge not only city government but also ordinary residents and the non-government sectors to take action with respect to serius problems related to housing, jobloss, and social welfare. The situation is especially grave for the aged male singletons struggling for their survival in this community. Together with the East Asian colleagues tackling with the issues in support of aged people and rough sleepers with difficulty, this workshop aims to deal with and to share among us the present conditions of disadvantaged aged male singletons and rough sleepers, and at the same time community support action for these persons, especially in Osaka, Taipei and Hong Kong.

(3) Small-firm (SMEs) dominated industrial district in Higashi Osaka and Kobe
Not only big firms such as SONY and Toyota, but also small firms are key players of the Japanese manufacturing industry. Industrial districts dominated by those small-firms are distinctive due to high density of factories, inter-firm networks and community activities. Since the mid-1980s, districts have been pressured by endaka (yen appreciation), competition with south-east Asia and China, and land-use conflict. We would like to discuss the sustainability of small firms in global competition
